Joe Henderson Tribute

The project is primarily based on Joe Henderson’s famous compositions that appeared initially on his personal album recordings through the 60s, 70s and 80s. The band is formed by Charis Ioannou on saxophone, Antreas Yerolatsitis on guitar, Christos Yerolatsitis on organ and Marios Spyrou on drums.

About the Event

The project is primarily based on Joe Henderson’s famous compositions that appeared initially on his personal album recordings through the 60s, 70s and 80s. The band is formed by Charis Ioannou on saxophone, Antreas Yerolatsitis on guitar, Christos Yerolatsitis on organ and Marios Spyrou on drums. The chosen repertoire includes a wide variety of Joe’s musical style. Starting from his hard bop era to the modal compositions and his colourful ballads, the project is attempting to present a well-rounded picture from the master’s great legacy.

A few words about the musicians:

Charis Ioannou was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1976. In 1997 he was enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied saxophone performance and Jazz composition. Charis won the Woodwind Achievement Award in the last year of his studies in Boston and in 2001, after graduation, he moved to New York where he stayed for three years. While in New York, Charis earned his Master’s degree in performance from the New York University and in the meantime performed and taught around the state. Charis left from the United States in 2005 and moved back to Cyprus. The return to his home country found Charis collaborating with various musicians and appearing in all the major clubs and festivals around Cyprus as well as in various venues around the world including performances in Greece, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Poland, Serbia, Spain, England, Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, Lebanon, Germany, Senegal and the U.S.A.  He has conducted numerous workshops in Cyprus, Lebanon, Greece and Italy. Charis is currently teaching the saxophone and the jazz idiom at The University of Nicosia and continuing to perform and record as a leader as well as a sideman in Cyprus and abroad.

Antreas Yerolatsitis is a Cypriot Jazz guitar player. He was born in 1988 in Nicosia, Cyprus.
At the age of 6 he started classical piano lessons in a music school in Nicosia. At the age of 15, he had his first classical guitar studies, for 1 year along with the piano. From the age of 16 to 20 he had rock/blues guitar and modern music theory lessons.

At his 20th year he moved to Rotterdam for 1 year, to prepare himself for the entrance examinations of the various conservatories of the Netherlands. He had lessons with teachers like Ed Verhoef and Peter Nieuwerf.

In 2009 he got accepted in the Royal Conservatory of The Hague as a Jazz Guitar performance bachelor student. After the bachelor he got in the master’s program of the Royal Conservatory from where he graduated in the summer of 2015.  Since then, he is performing on a regular basis with various projects and groups in musical events, festivals and various stages and clubs, along with music teaching.

Christos Yerolatsitis is a Cypriot pianist, keyboardist and composer. With an interest in various music genres, Christos’s music is diverse and flexible to go in different directions. 

Christos moved to The Netherlands in 2009 where he studied jazz piano performance at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague (BA 2009-2013) and Conservatorium van Amsterdam (MA 2013-2015). In 2016 he appeared in the biggest theatres of the country with the “Eef van Breen Group” in cooperation with the extremely successful theatre production “Borgen”. 

In 2017 he moved to Mumbai where he got employed as the head of the Piano department of the True School of Music, one of India’s biggest music schools. 

Christos is currently based in Cyprus working with various International bands as a leader and a sideman. 

The drummer Marios Spyrou was born in Nicosia in 1990. He was inspired from an early age by his father, who is also a jazz drummer. He has played extensively with the top Cypriot jazz musicians and has a Masters in Jazz from the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Holland.
